July 2014--Golden Days

July was a wonderful and busy month in Rudolph, with no extremely hot weather, and lots of great family days.  Mark and Hilde were home most of the month enjoying the catch-up work and lots of gardening.

Early in the month, Jim and family came for a lovely visit.  Those little girls enjoyed the little pool, fireworks and just chasing around the yard.  Jim and Kayme had a little time out without the girls and had fun at garage sales, and Jim zipped around doing the mowing.  It was a great time.

Mark and Hilde really got going on a variety of tasks.  Hilde tackled the long-neglected east side of the house, where rain-shadow, rocks and a scattered stockpile of various bricks, covered by grapevine, made for a challenging weedy mess.  She also painted the garage interior and got several crochet projects done.  Mark is making serious progress on his radio project and then worked on the west side of the house, getting a lovely block edging in place on a difficult double sloped lilac bed.  It was very satisfying for both of them to have their energy back and be able to get some of these things done!

A couple special days  really shone out this month.  For Hilde's birthday, Mark and Hilde had a lovely, leisurely dinner out, followed by dusk along the Wisconsin River, with the music from the Point city band echoing off the water and a tiny flotilla of ducklings at their feet.  Tranquil and lovely.

The truly golden day, later in the month, featured Mark and Hilde meeting Jim and the girls in Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac (Kayme was attending the Worship Conference).  This park is lovely and old-fashioned, Mark was taken there when he was four or five to ride on the miniature train.  Rhiannon and Rowan had a wonderful time, and Grandpa and Grandma enjoyed it at least as much.  Petting zoo first, then a picnic and the girls just running and tumbling on the grass, followed by lots of time on the playsets.  Then all went on the train, and the girls rode the carrousel, with Jim squiring them.  The happy Henkel group finished up the day with ice cream cones.  It was totally wonderful.

Beyond the great summer work and play, regular work continued, with Mark intensively preparing for a two-week August trial and Hilde dealing with some premature proposed ordinances and some truly crazy scheduling issues.  She enjoyed one lovely luncheon with her crafts friends, a surprise visit from Pat and Paul and some interesting reading, too.  This is the way summer should be!
